One last tidbit of info once you are past Malaquite there are no bathrooms or port-a-potties that I saw. If I am to come back to Padre which I hope to.I can honestly say I would most likely not be making a stop at the national seashore. You could drive on it and set up for the day which was a plus since we had a toddler in tow. I can tell you the public beach - Whitecap beach was less then 4 min from where we were staying and we LOVED that beach (Yes we shelled here found some really good ones!!). We did check out a few other beaches and I will review those as well. We did unpack and looked around for a bit but decide we didn't want to spend the day at this beach.so we packed up and left and did not return during our stay. It was very pretty to look out at the ocean in this area as it just went on and on but it was not for us. I am guessing that is why Malaquite is popular because they clean and take care of the 5 (?) miles of beach. I get that 70 miles of coastline is lot to take care of (I am guessing they do something but can't say for sure). You are to pick up more then just what you bring in and we did but it just wasn't what I expected and for a "national park". There was stuff everywhere.stuff campers had left, washed up stuff, and then just trash. While he is primarily associated with The Retina Eye Center, he also runs a Uveitis clinic once a month at our Forest Drive location in Columbia and sees patients at our Aiken retina clinic once a week. I had envisioned this coastline and dunes pretty bare and secluded and expected there to be debris and some trash. Nigam joined Palmetto Retina Center’s partner clinic, The Retina Eye Center, in April 2023. The people that were there were campers. So here is were I guess my expectations were to high. There were not many people for sure, so the reviews had that right. The sand was pretty well packed so we had no problems but if there are storms and lots of standing water on the beach I can see this being a problem and hence the 4 wheel drive. We did not have 4 wheel drive 0 - Chevy Traverse and went pretty far trying to find the right spot. Now from mile marker 1-5 any type of vehicle can drive this stretch and be ok, it is once you pass mile marker 5 that you want to be careful and the rangers say to have 4 wheel drive. Palmetto Retina Center is part of Retina Consultants of America, a network of leading retinal care and research practices in the United States. You can drive on the beach once you hit mile marker 1. We did not check it out as the park ranger told us that 1st you could not drive on it we would need to park in the lot and haul are stuff down to the beach, 2nd that if we wanted to do shelling we should head farther out (I found this odd because all the reviews on tripadvisor told me this was the beast shelling beach). Malaquite beach is located down from the guest services/bath house and concessions. Malaquite is basically the start of the beach area (over 70 miles of protected coastline) once you pay to get into the "park" if you will ($10.00 for single vehicle for a 7 day pass). Ok first I would like to say that the national seashore and Malaquite Beach are the same thing.
